The Sears at Pembroke Mall has already been broken up with Nordstrom Rack and Fresh Market being built. It's only a matter of time until the old Kmart across the street is razed. That's very prime property.

I can't wait for that Kmart to implode.

Honestly, even if these Macy's weren't closing, Coconut would probably be berating us for still shopping at Macy's when they're so clearly obsolete.

Its pretty common knowledge that brick and morter retail will shrink even more as online retail heats up. These closings and shrinkings happen all over the map folks. The list of Macy's that closed includes the one in Century City, in the middle of freaking Beverly Hills!
Macy's and other department stores have been losing business for years, they are becoming dinosaurs. Sears was once king in this country and they are winnowing down to catalog service centers in strip malls.
Macy's used to mean something but has become very much a part of the increasingly banal chain retail scene in this country. Their expansion over the last 20 years has zapped the brand of any kind of once held catchet.
The Macy's closings have nothing to do with the economic gestalt of Hampton Roads.
The haters jump on anything that moves in their continuing quest for a truely negative experience for those who seek information in the Hampton Roads forum.
So sad.
You can try and spin as much as you want, it doesn't change what's really happening. The Macy's in Century City? How about:

Quote:
Macy’s will build a new 155,000-square-foot store on two levels to replace its existing 136,000-square-foot Westfield Century City location in Los Angeles, CA, which was opened in 1976. The existing Macy’s will be closed in January 2016 and razed to accommodate new development in the mall. The all-new Macy’s, expected to open in November 2016, will be built in a highly visible location along Santa Monica Boulevard. Westfield Century City also includes an existing Bloomingdale’s store which will be completely remodeled in 2016 and connected to new development in the mall.
Macy's (M) Announces Restructuring, Store Closures/Openings

Lookie there, I'll be darned! Closed because they're knocking it down to build a BIGGER store!

New Macy's stores are being opened in other areas, so dinosaurs? Not quite.

"Lookie there", really, how adult. One for you sport.
The writing is on the wall Voice of Reason, the reality of the situation is that department stores ARE dinosaurs (look that up as you feverishly research) and if you're not well aware of that there are some parts missing.

God/Allah/Buddha help us when Macy's closes, the last aircraft carrier shuffles away in the mist and there are bread lines and apple peddlers all over Hampton Roads along with 64/264 gridlocked with escaping citizens from your hell hole cultural wasteland. That would really light up your mojo and maybe keep your lid on for awhile huh?

Don't see anything wrong with saying "lookie there"......

Anyways why aren't the Macy's in Northern Virginia closing? I don't think Macy's is a dinosaur or is going out of business. It's still a very popular store especially during the holiday season and has a loyal customer following. Have you guys seen the Macy's near times square around Christmas? Wow. Anyways I don't think Macy's closing in Hampton Roads has to do with Macy's about to end up like Sears or Kmart because Macy's isn't going to end up like that anytime soon.

Don't see how the Macy's at Landmark Mall is still opened either. That mall isn't even a mall anymore and it gets absolutely no business

Both Macy's and Sears own their buildings in the Landmark Mall (in Alexandria, VA), which is why they are still there. But even with the mall being almost empty, when I go there both Macy's and Sears have some customers. I actually like to shop at the Landmark Macy's since it's it's not crazy busy like the one in Tyson's Corner, and it has a decent selection of clothing in my size. The dense population of Northern VA and the overall good economy also helps even a dead mall to get some business. Plus, I don't have a car and it has good bus service.

The Macy's in Northern Virginia are part of the original New York division and overall have nicer stores and a better designer selection. These include original Macy's as well as converted Hecht's stores. Perhaps the Hampton Roads stores have a more limited selection or poor management, and were probably former Hecht's stores as well. But Macy's still has nice large stores in many major markets, despite some of the poor performing stores converted from May Co. which may be closing. They are only adapting to changes in the marketplace and closing underperforming stores.

Yes, the Hampton Roads and Richmond stores were part of the Macy's South Division based in Atlanta, which was later merged with Macy's Midwest to form the Macy's Central Division.

BTW, it looks like three Richmond area stores are also closing; a thread has been posted in the Richmond forum.

The writing's written on the wall for Richmond as well, apparently.
