In case you made a decision to not come down to Hampton Roads, why don't you consider Westchester? Its not cheap but neither is NYC. White Plains, Yonkers, and other towns have areas that are decently walkable and public transportation. I'm from Ossining myself. Those suburbs are nothing like these suburbs down here, but you might get a little of what you're looking for lifestyle wise while still keeping your current job that wouldn't require you to dip into retirement. We live in the the Southside of Hampton Roads. I'm happy raising my family here. I do miss being near a major airport!

Well if u have no car, you can use a uber (not completely sure if they have that in VA), its like a cheap taxi. The public transportation system there is nowhere near as reliable as the NYC MTA.
