We've landed another. This one from Facebook and Microsoft. This is a pretty big deal for this area.

They are actually partnering with Telefonica who announced the cable installation a few days ago.
Awesome news!

^They're two different cables, actually. One goes down to Brazil and the other goes over to Spain.

Anybody have any idea of the jobs impact this has? I keep hearing it's a big deal and more announcements like this are coming but no talk of how many jobs this will bring.

It's a pretty big deal. Getting not one but two cables at once is gonna make an enormous impact. The anchor station itself isn't going to be very heavily staffed, I imagine, but it's going to have an oasis effect- data-intensive industries are going to see it as a big benefit to being located in Virginia Beach.

Furthermore, having one anchor station is likely going to attract more undersea cables- possibly to Africa, even.

I wonder if that's what the, now elected, councilman meant when he said he was going to bring high speed internet to the area?

Well, that and the fact that this now makes the area more attractive to Google fiber. This pretty much demands that gigabit internet be deployed through out the region. Data centers, tech companies, and government tend to cluster around these highspeed connections. Having this massive data hub in an area with less traffic and cheaper land also makes us more attractive to the tech companies in NOVA. This type of thing can put us on the same level as the research triangle in the Raleigh area. It'll attract high paying jobs and millenials.
