My wife, nine month old child, and I will be moving to the Norfolk area in around 2-3 months for work. The job will be based downtown near MacArthur Center. We have a budget of around $400k. Our primary concerns are being in a great school district, having a nice house, and a fenced in yard. We are mostly homebodies and not terribly concerned with being near great restaurants, shopping or other similar attractions.

Based on our very preliminary research, the schools in Chesapeake seem to be some of the best in the region. The three high schools that appeared to us to be the “best” were Grassfields, Great Bridge and Hickory.

We are not familiar with the area and I would greatly appreciate any insights people may have, and particularly regarding (1) whether we are overlooking other great schools in the area and (2) how the commute in the morning and evening are from the Grassfields, Great Bridge and Hickory areas.

The commute from those areas in Chesapeake to downtown Norfolk will not be as bad as if you were trying to get to/from any of the military bases. I am frequently asked about schools. There are on-line sites that will give you a great deal of information on schools. The other source is anecdotal as you can imagine. From clients I have who have either moved to or from those areas of Chesapeake spoke highly of Grassfield and Hickory schools.
There are some areas of Virginia Beach where folks have been very satisfied with the schools. Good luck with your search and I am sure that you will see a number of comments on this thread as we have some folks who are not bashful about what they like or don't..to include schools.

I think you would be fine there, and personally, based off what you're looking for, I think you're really going to enjoy the Hampton Roads area.

That commute isn't too bad normally, and it looks like you've done your research. It's a little bit of a drive, but traffic isn't usually bad. You'll get a little bit of a slowdown at the 264/464 interchange, but it's manageable.

General rule is, try to avoid a commute that involves crossing anything with "tunnel" in the name!

Virginia Beach has some really great schools as well, but if you don't much care about amenities nearby, Chesapeake is great, too. And your housing budget will get you something nice as well. I love the home we were able to purchase in VB for sub-$330k. We also moved here from NOVA, so, if you're used to NOVA traffic, you'll be just fine down here!
