I am flying to VA in April to interview for a teaching postion in the Suffolk school district (Hillpoint or Elephant's Fork). I have also been offered an interview in York County schools. I know that I will have to move from the OC in California to relocate and was wondering where the most affordable areas are around Suffolk City center. I don't want to be "in the city". I would love to have some decent land (at least an .75 acre) and stay within our budget of about $230K. I don't mind being a 10-15 min. drive away from main areas of towns. I would like to rent for about 6 months so that I can look for a house to buy. I need to know the areas of Suffolk to stay away from. I am planning on starting a family in the next year or 2, so safety is a concern. I know that York & Suffolk jobs would greatly change the drive to work. Just need to know if my price range for a house is reasonable? Hard to move to an area that is so big and offers so many different places to live. Especially when I am clueless about the area in general. If someone could give me some areas to check out on my April visit, that would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks!

You will not find much for 230K in York County. Your better bet is Suffolk. There are many great neighborhoods there.

Just as there are many great areas in Suffolk, there are also many not so great. Just as with any city.

I know them both. Elephants Fork is a nice school. I used to live not far from there, but my kids were amazingly zoned to go the other way, to Oakland.

Really, I like all of Suffolks schools for the most part.

There are some areas that appear to be nice, but may not be.

Here is something someone told me one time about looking at houses.

Look while people are out and about while you are looking. Like when people are getting off of work, and kids are out of school.

You see a lot about a neighborhood in the evening that is not there while everyone is away.

230k.

Are you looking for new construction are something that is already there? There are some nice things out there for 230k, you just really have to look for it. I have not been on the looking end for quite some time, in Suffolk, just the renting end.

What are you looking for?

We are looking to buy a 2 or 3 bedroom home that isn't in total need of rehab. We don't mind doing some minor changes to make it our own, but nothing that is major construction. I personally love the craftsman (arts&crafts) style homes here in CA. Or bungalows as they are called in some parts. And like I said in last post, would really like some land. What neighborhoods in Suffolk are within 30 minute drive of Elephant's Fork that are nice family areas? Any feedback on what areas to avoid in Suffolk would be great too!! Thanks.
