I'm not whiner, thank you very much. I have also posted positive things on the What I love about Hampton Roads post also.

Look, I choose to stay here.....I simply know the difference in what this area has to offer versus other areas. If you've lived here all your life you don't know any better, that's all.

....and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Also, I grew up in Philadelphia. The mass transit in the city was, in theory, good. But, at least when I was growing up there, the fares were very high and the buses were inconsistent (did not always come as scheduled). The subway / rail lines were ok, but did not cover the whole city by any means. The suburbs were typical suburban sprawl that reuqired a car unless you were going to Center City, Philly. by train. That said, Philly's mass transit is better than most of what exisists in America.
Sorry I wasn't saying the big cities have bad mass transit, they are real cities.

We have a high water table that hurts us, and there wasn't smart growth, which hurts us. And there are 7 cities competing with each other, which hurts us. And the generally mentality (intelligence?) of the people hurt us.

The region doesn't deserve to grow or prosper.

Umm, I've lived in Raleigh, NC, and Philadelphia, PA. Soo...? The area is not as backwards as you all make it seem. The region doesn't deserve to grow or prosper? What does that mean? The region has embraced smart growth.. What do you call the VB Strategic Growth Areas around light rail? Norfolk's increased downtown/ ghent population, portsmouth's downtown gentrification? South Norfolk? Chesapeake's village plans? Mass transit will work.

cityboi- you are preaching to the choir, there are certain people (Tel) who continue to bash the area and will not change their tune ( I mean who says "the region doesn't deserve to prosper" ; what an ignorant statement).
Good thing there are people like you to see the positives of HR and its great potential.

The only reason we're here is for a job. Are you planning to relocate
or retire here?

We have no plans to buy a home here because we do not want to complicate
our potential exit from Hampton Roads. We don't have kids, so we don't have school issues
to deal with.

Thanks!
To make a long story short, I had moved here previously with my best friend from high school (he was stationed here and I had always wanted to move south to escape the Northeast winters ). I hated it here and when he got restationed we moved to FL, but shortly after the move I started talking to a girl I had met when I was here previously. We got close and I moved back and eventually married her . Her family is here so I can understand her not wanting to leave which means that I will be here for the rest of my life probably . I am happily married, don't get me wrong, so that part is worth it. But knowing I will be stuck here permanently is pretty depressing . At least you get to move away!

I hear your frustration and my advice would be to get out as soon as you can!!!

As much as i love to hate Hampton Roads, it's where i'm from, where i was raised, and it will always have a place in my heart. It's not so bad. I've traveled a lot and we have it pretty good. Boring at times, but a decent place to live.

i live for summer nights in hampton roads though. it makes me feel alive!

Just...wow.

That one sentence sums up why I typically don't expect productive or informative posts from you about Hampton Roads. It's not the tenth circle, dude...there are plenty of excellent things about the area. I have yet to find an area of the US that I totally thought was a pit, and I've lived in CA, CO, WA, HI, GA, VA, NJ, and NY.

I think you'll find when you finally get your fondest wish and move, you'll discover these two truths:

a) It's not better other places
b) Hampton Roads actually had some great qualities

Boring at times? For me it is boring all the times. There is nothing to do here.
