My husband and I are looking to move to the hampton roads area by next fall and I wanted to know what are the safest parts of hampton roads ? We have a 3 year old daughter who will soon be starting pre school and we want to choose the safest area for our family. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate a response.

That's a very broad question. What city are you looking to stay in? You should look for cities near your job, because traffic is a something else, especially traveling across the HRBT.

I been away from the area for a while but I do know that Virginia Beach and Williamsburg are the safest cities of HR. Chesapeake is safe in most areas.

There are safe places in all areas of Hampton Roads. Like another poster said, you need to know where your work will be, and also, a very big thing.... research schools.

Soon, your little one will be off to big kid school, and you want to be zoned for good schools.

This should be number one. Know what kinds of things you want around you. You want the city? You want the country? Small town? Hampton Roads offers all of these things, and places to go are never very far away.

You need to know what you want.

The best area of H.R., and Virginia Beach is Pungo. It's the last place where there is still good, clean country living. Kids can be kids. It's great to see kids running bare footed across the yards with their dog tagging along. As for schools, Creeds elementary is great. Many of the teachers grew up right here in Pungo, and now teach at the school they attended. It a great community overall.

Red Mill Commons is just up the road, and has every type of shopping or dining you might desire.

You should go to the city's websites. I know Virginia Beach PD posts crime statistics by area. Be sure to study carefully - All neighborhoods have spurts of vandalism now and then, usually until someone gets caught. You will find some things, like domestic violence, being reported over and over in the same block (no addresses are listed), and that is more than likely the same house. Also, check the registered sex offenders website. And, look at the school sites. Again, I am most familiar with Virginia Beach - they have detailed performance statistics. I think you can get to them all from vbgov.com.

no offense, but i've heard that Pungo is not very diverse, and may be a little racist. is that true? i know one family that lives out there, but i don't know if i'd consider them an authority on the subject. the idea of my kids running barefoot with the dog sounds like home to me (grew up in Ohio). thanks.

I believe the Kiln Creek area of Newport News is a nice, safe area.

However, it TOTALLY depends on where you work. You want to avoid tunnels if at all possible for a daily commute, or at least certain ones - like the HRBT. Once you tell us that, we might be able to help better.

I also like the Bennets Creek area of Suffolk as well as Eagle Harbor, but that area is not as populated - yet

I would say Williamsburg and Yorktown. I like Kiln Creek but I have to be honest, I have never been anywhere in the U.S. that had a safe neighborhood next to an airport....until I moved here! It is the weirdest thing. Most people don't want to live next to the airport because of the noise, which is why the property is usually undesirable. Not here! Houses there are in the 300's and 400's! It is the craziest thing!!!

You could also try Gloucester, but it is a little far from everything.
