Split

It shows people that Hampton Roads is growing. For example, Northeastern Ohio was 216 forever until 330 was created. Cleveland area kept the initial 216 and Akron area took 330. There has no been no psychological divide or drama concerning this. Maybe back in the 90s it was suddenly a long distance call but I think that has been in place due to 10 digit dialing anyway. You can't just pick up the phone and dial 7 digits to anyone, even within the same area code. Cell phones automatically dials it as a 10 digit number. As someone mentioned it is the exchange that makes it long distance anyway. The exchange is the 3 digits after the area code.

When I see new area codes I just assume there is growth. Hell, West Virginia is still 304. I would love to see them get a new area code because of growth.

Well if you get a call and you recognize the area code you can gauge where they call is coming from. If I get a call from certain area codes I know it's probably family for example.
