Okay, so maybe desperate is a little extreme, but...

My husband and I would like to retire to somewhere in southern Virginia where we could be within a half hour drive of a good marina (for his sailboat) but still be on a good sized acreage (maybe 10 acres?) with lots of wilderness (for my love of nature and gardening and solitude).

I grew up next to a huge swamp so I'm actually fairly keen on the idea of living near a swamp again. It doesn't have to be navigable in any way. In fact, I'd prefer that it NOT be anything a person could put a boat on!

Ideally, this perfect home would also be within a couple hours of a first-rate hospital AND within half an hour of a university (not a community college). It seems like somewhere around the Norfolk area would fit the bill, but... is there anything like that available? We'd have 500-600,000 to spend on land and a house.

I suppose we could just get in the car, drive down to Norfolk and start spiraling out from the city center to see what's available, but... that would take a lot of time! Does anyone have any suggestions for areas we might check out?

Thanks!

Gates is just across the boarder of VA & NC. Left of the dismal swamp! There are alot of homes going up and the price isn't bad, being that it's NC vice VA.

there are several properties in your price range in Chesapeake, virginia beach, suffolk, smithfield, that fit your criteria, there is nothing in Norfolk with that acreage. you also have to be sure a sailboat can navigate

Thanks. Yes, the idea would be to rent a slip at a marina for the boat. But we wouldn't want to have to drive more than half an hour to get to it. (Closer is even better, but of course the closer we get to the Bay, the more expensive the real estate is going to be.)

you could do VA. Beach (back bay area) and chesapeake. All kinds of places to dock the boat within range. but you may not get that much acreage for the price. Depends on how much house though. it may be doable.
