Family weekend ideas? (Virginia Beach, Hampton, Williamsburg: where to stay, gardens, beach)

Havn't been down this way in a few years. I've been to Busch Gardens and Williamsburg before (and I'm not really into rides) and really have only passed through Virginia Beach previously (we did see the Doors of the 21st Century play in that area there a few years back).
Any recommendations on things to see and do and where to stay for a family weekend? We have an 8 year old daugther. Obviously, she would like the beach but what else?

And in the summer..there's always something going on at the beaches. There's fireworks every saturday nite too..just ask my dog!
