I have seen a lot of posts from people moving here from other areas such as the Northeast and especially Michigan. I was just curious what made you choose to move to Hampton Roads out of any other area in the country? Did you get a job here and that was the reason for the move? Or did you research different areas and find Hampton Roads to be the best?

While this city has a number of benefits, if I could truly move anywhere in the country I would not choose here. There seem to be a lot of other cities in the South that offer a much lower cost of living, safer area, less traffic, more family friendly atmosphere, etc. Or is this just an issue where I am thinking the grass is greener on the other side?

Mainly just wondering what made you choose Hampton Roads over cities like Raleigh, Charlotte, etc.? Thanks.

The weather is mild year round and the beach. And friends; overall friendliness and ease of making friends; meeting new people here. A big city in itself but not so dirty and crime-ridden. I guess it depends where you were before though or were raised? Raised in Baltimore here so its nice to me in comparison. Feel safer walking some streets here too then back in MD

I came to Virginia Beach via Holy Loch, Scotland. My ship was homeported here before her decomming back in 93. I stayed here because before I got out of the Navy, I already had a great paying job, bought a house at 27 and made this my home. I love the versitility of the area, always something to do, the ease of everyday living and being a passive/agressive person, it's my kind of place. I'm never in a hurry to get anywhere, even to work (I just leave earlier if I have things to do on the way). Every neighborhood in VB has stores, restaurants, pubs or whatever and I feel I don't have to go very far to get anything. I live 10.8 miles from work, which I can take the streets vice interstate if I feel like it. To me, there's no place like home in VB! :-)

My husband's job transfer brought us here. He works for Landmark. We moved from an area north of Baltimore, MD, where the cost of living was a bit higher than here.

We like it here a lot. VA Beach reminds me of Columbia, MD, except we are on the ocean here!

That being said, I would love to someday buy a house in the Pungo/Blackwater area of VB with about an acre of ground.

We came to Virginia Beach from New York right after 9/11. My husband got a job offer down here and we were really ready to get out of the city at that point. We love it down here, for the most part. People are very friendly, there's lots to do if you have kids, it's very relaxed and the weather is nice. I don't know that, if given a choice, we would have chosen to live here as opposed to any other city in the country, but it's worked out wonderfully for us and I'm glad we're here.

We are moving to the area because my husband got a job. Jobs in Michigan aren't there. Which is funny because in the late 50's my Dad who was born in Richmond Virginia came to Michigan for work. Lots a people came to Michigan and many worked for GM. That isn;t the case anymore. It is very hard to find work here no matter what your skill are or your degree. Teaching jobs aren't here as they are laying teachers off as well. It is sad and I'm sad we have to leave.

I moved from Connecticut to Hampton Roads. Neither my parents nor myself chose to be here. The Navy chose for us... I just haven't got the guts to leave, yet.

Oh come on! You know you love it here. CT is just too cold, too snowy and lately, it's been rather crazy up there!

Crazy how? Although I would agree with the cold snowy part. I want to move down there (to Williamsburg, I think) because it is warmer and cheaper than where I am now yet I'd only be 7-8 hours away (by car) from my family in NJ. Futher south would be too hot and too far, I think.

I love cold and snowy. That's why I'm such a fish out of water down here. I really miss the snow. I miss really cold, crisp days (we're talking temps below 40) where the sun shines extraordinarily brightly. I miss the crunch of snow under boots. I miss seeing animal tracks in snow. I miss the clean smell of snow.

It's probably the main reason I want to get out of here. It's just too mild for me. And flat. It's very flat here. The closest thing to a mountain in HR is Mt. Trashmore. Of course...it IS coastal...hence the flatness.
