if you need public schools i wouldn't advise norfolk. newport news doesn't have amazing schools or really low crime but menchville is a really good area, denbigh is also good but schools aren't amazing. hampton has decent schools and it is a little safer than newport news espically if you are close to the york county line. york county has argubably the best schools in HR and probably the safest area in HR. but to get to norfolk you have to cross that HR from NN, Hampton, or YC tunnel and that will be a long trip. chesapeake and suffolk have good schools and a more sensible commute than the peninsula. portsmouth is pretty close to norfolk and has decent schools but it's a hit or miss area. so with all this your best option is most likely chesapeake.

Default good luck

We are new in the area and ?

First the weather in summer it is really hot and humid you can not do anything outside it is a little better on peninsula.

The traffic , I have travel all around europe and never see any think like that. Everybody is working in the same area. There are bridge every where so you pass from 4 to 8 lines to 1 ! There are accident nearly every day so that is not a good think to.
Even though the speed is lower than in europe, they ride crazy and truck mainly.

I would advice you to rest in williamsburg, 40 drive without traffic, if your future work permit you to travel out off traffic. You would find great school, neighbourood and country side.

We are living in Norfolk, great for my wife to go working but ... we are really thinking about going there for a beter quality of life.

Also, keep your contact with your financal bank in Europe because here for the first years it is really difficult to have credit. What ever is your job.

For renting ? we have buy a house and we know that we only stay 3 years it is better deals than renting for us.

I hope having help you . If you need any detail.

Pascal

actually i jus looked at the scores for portsmouth schools and wouldn't advise that school system either. williamsburg is a lil expenisve but if you've got the $ go for it. your commute to NFK will be terrible.
