My wife and I have recently moved to Newport News, near city center.

We use the usual Walmart/Costco/Foodlion for our daily needs. However, we also need to find some decent chinese / oriental grocery stores to supplement our grocery shopping.

As we are new to the area and have no idea where to find the best chinese/ oriental grocery stores around here, we'd like to seek advice from the experts here. We are fine if it is within the Hampton Roads area (doesn't have to be in Newport News), just as long as they area within a 25mi radius.

If anyone knows, please kindly let we know. Thanks in advance!

Here is a map I recently put together of all asian food stores that I could find information on.
Attached is a PDF of the same store info in a list with a link to the map as well.

Hope it helps.

(I can't seem to figure out how to post the link properly on these forums, so the PDF is your best bet.)

*edit* adding list of stores. I recommend the PDF, though, as it has more details.

I was going to say:

Asia Grocery
5444 Virginia Beach Blvd #
112
Virginia Beach, VA 23462

But, that was off the top of my head since I moved out of Viriginia Beach way back in 1995. I guess they are still around as per Envyeye's attachment and a lot more Asian grocery stores in Hampton Road than I remember back in the mid 1990's.

I should stress that I have not personally been to these stores. I compiled the list merely for my own benefit so I could find a few specific items. In fact, I made the list and map this afternoon from information provided by a few websites such as the ODU university student info pages and Yahoo city search. I actually discovered this forum while searching, which is the only reason I am posting my findings. All were able to be queried on Google Maps by business name and address, so I can only assume they are somewhat current. I'll have more information after tonight, as I'm going shopping when I leave work and will be putting my list into action. I did note on the map that the 1st location listed for Hampton gave me trouble in my search. I was not able to search on the business name, so it's very likely they have closed their doors. All others came right up so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I got at least some right.

My advice, give them a call first just to confirm.

Good luck!

Good list envy. Does anyone happen to know if there are any areas around Norfolk/Va Beach that have something of an established chinese/asian community?

Va Beach has a relatively large population of Filipinos that mostly reside in the Kempsville area.

Does anyone know when Fortune Center grocery store will be openning? It's located at Virginia Beach Blvd. and Witchduck. Thanks, it is sooo big and I can't wait, even though I live by Newport News.

Is it going to be in the old Value City Dept. Store building or Bloom Brothers Furniture building?

it's on that corner. i can't remember the location of either store, but i'm thinking it's going to take the place of the furniture building.

also, if anyone can chime in, i haven't been to every oriental grocery, but do any of these places carry stuff you can find in nyc chinatown bakeries? i love custard cakes, wintermelon cakes, red bean cakes, etc. fortune on holland didn't have any and i haven't been to four seasons and the market off great neck/vb blvds. in a long time.
