Are there any reasonable carpet retailers in the area?

Home Depot & Lowes are both very reliable and resonable. Their installation contractors are top of the line locally. I've used HD and they did a great job on two rooms I needed done before my furniture came.
If you want a private contractor, Strickland Floors does an awesome job with carpet and hardwood.

In November, I went through Lowe's for about 1400 square feet of carpetting. The price was good, but their contractors took an extra week to finish a job that they only planned would take one day. I also ended up having to finish installing a closet carpetting myself. We complained to Lowe's several times throughout the installation and received some discounts off future purchases, but it wasn't a great experience.

I had a GREAT and very reasonably priced experience with Eastern Floor Covering which is located on Denbigh in Newport News. The service was great from when we talked to someone on the showroom floor down to the installers who did the labor. The installers even asked if it was okay to use my restroom. They were very respectful of my home and the fact I had a small child in the home the day of the install.
