I am looking at relocating from ny and am trying to find the best area for my kids. I have a daughter who is 6 and has cerebral palsy and needs pt, ot, speech, and could really benefit from a school with a good program to help her with her writing skills. any suggestions on where a kid friendly area is with good special ed? is chesapeake still in the va beach public schools or is their district seperate? any info would be appreciated.

Kathy,

Yes, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake are separate districts. We are in Virginia Beach and have not had any problems with services - but we have only been here 6 months. I will say I got a little nervous when they called an IEP meeting at the beginning of the school year - but it was fine. Turned out they rewrote my son's IEP to the better and added PT which was removed in our previous district (Northern Virginia). My son is still in PreK though, so can't give you any advice on elementary or schools. Good luck in your move.

I am in Western Branch/Chesapeake, and I love the Chittum School. I volunteer in the school and see happy children in the programs that offer extra assistance. I knew a mother whose daughter had CP, and she was pleased. Of course, my observations are second hand. I wish you all the best.
