My step-mom grew up in Chesapeake, think she's 50ish. Anyways, I don't notice an accent with her except she does pronounce Norfolk as Nawfuk. Sometimes she'll throw a y'all in for good measure. Other than that she sounds like she could fit in anywhere. I'm terrible on picking up accents though, it has to be blatant for me to recognize it. I don't even hear an accent in Richmond unless it's an old timer or someone in from the country. I don't live there so I really can't say. I do live in Staunton and work in Charlottesville and even in the valley, not much accent unless you grew up on a farm or are an old timer. C-ville there's hardly any because of the transient nature of the town with UVA. There are accents all over the state, but I believe they may die out from new transplants and the schools teaching english classes better.

Personally I think people make too big a deal about accents, a lot of it depends on the individual. You can't just classify a whole region as having one specific accent because it varies between your education, parents, friends, and your understanding of the english language.

I would definitely say most people I've come across have a southern accent. We just moved here from Las Vegas a couple of months ago & my kids are going to Hickory schools. They can't get over how the kids talk and how some actually CALL THEMSELVES rednecks.

I'm native of Va Beach and I've been told by various people that I have a slight southern accent mixed with a Pittsburgh accent (where both my parents are from). I even had a friend (who is from England) tell me I have a "slight twang" when I speak. hahaha

I notice a lot of different accents, though. I presume it's because of the military.

Most of our speech and traditions have been watered down because of all the military bases. You have to go to Poquoson or Gloucester to hear our native accent. Very few of us have it anymore. I'm from Buckroe Beach
