Hi! My first post, I hope someone can help! We need to get to Norfolk Naval Base, leaving from Southern RI. We have a triptik from AAA, takes us over to NJ Tpke, avoids much of I-95 then down 13 through to the Bridge Tunnel.

Is 3-4 AM a good time to leave RI, mid-week? Or earlier better? I figured we would get there just after noon. We have no idea of traffic in that area, except what I've read and that is the traffic is a nightmare. Also, is NIA fairly easy to get to from the Naval Base.

Thanks in advance!

It takes me a solid 4 hours minimum to get to Norfolk from Baltimore using 95. If I take Rt 17 from Southern MD down through all the VA Penninsulas- it takes 6-7 hours, I like to go that way if 95 is busy. Seems like that might be the route you are describing.

So, I can't see you getting all the way from RI to Norfolk in 8 hours...? When I was in college in MA the school told us to take the NJ turnpike from Baltimore, it took 7+ hours, and I have to say it was the longest route time-wise and most annoying- very frequent tolls although each one was only about 0.25- that was 10 years ago though, so it may have changed.

I guess you already used Mapquest or Google Maps to estimate the time of your trip? I would go based on that, and allow extra time around Baltimore/Washington DC and Hampton Roads. Posters that already live down there can probably give a little more specific info!

You wont really have much problem with traffic once you hit 13 all of the way down the eastern shore, just make note that route 13 is a speed trap so bet on staying close to the posted limit and watch for the speed reduction signs as you travel though the smaller towns along this route.

8 hours may be pushing it, it normally takes me 6-7 hours to get from NYC area to Norfolk with little traffic so I would say expect 9-10 hrs of drive time, and if you catch traffic it could more like 12-14

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! If my calculations are correct, leaving at 4 is going to put you in NYC area around 7-8ish (depending on what part of RI). If you miss that you will hit the Trenton/Philly area of the turnpike 8-9ish. I think you should leave no later than 3am, IMO.
