NEWPORT NEWS - Police are seeking information about two suspects, dressed in black, in a robbery and fatal shooting early Saturday at a Hardee's in the Denbigh area.

Dianne Green - a 47-year-old employee described by a neighbor as "a really sweet lady" - died from a single gunshot wound suffered during the robbery, which occurred about 5:20 a.m.

Another employee, a 21-year-old Newport News man, was shot and later treated for an injury at Riverside Regional Medical Center, but the injury wasn't life-threatening.

Police said the same bullet struck Green and the man. They also said the fast-food restaurant's manager, a 41-year-old Newport News woman, was at the restaurant during the robbery but was not injured.

Daily Press archives indicate that this would be the 23rd homicide in Newport News this year.

That's more than in all of 2006.

Police described the two suspects as black males of unknown ages, both about 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 8 and weighing 170 to 175 pounds.

They wore black clothing, including black do-rags and black bandannas, police said.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the Hardee's by foot, heading south. The chain restaurant was closed Saturday afternoon, with "Keep Out" signs and bright orange tape blocking its parking-lot entrances on Denbigh Boulevard and Deloice Crescent.

Green, the employee who was killed, lived in a second-floor apartment in a small white house on Curtis Tignor Road. The victim's downstairs neighbor, 40-year-old Theresa McCullough, said Green was "always laughing and joking" and regularly took part in church-related activities Wednesday nights, Sunday mornings and Sunday nights.

"She was just a sweetie," McCullough said. "It's just hard to believe that she's gone."

McCullough said her neighbor lived alone, didn't have children and wasn't married. Green didn't have a car, McCullough said, so each workday before 5 a.m., she walked the roughly 1.5 miles from her apartment to Hardee's.

McCullough said Green worked at Hardee's and lived in the Curtis Tignor Road apartment for at least five years. At the victim's apartment door Saturday afternoon, a half-dozen plastic red roses and a balloon decorated with a cross had been left as a memorial.

Police ask anyone with information about the robbery, shooting and homicide to call Crime Line toll-free at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (1-888-562-5887).

NEWPORT NEWS - Police are investigating the weekend's second homicide.

Kashon Williams, 17, was found on the road near the corner of 41st Street and Roanoke Avenue, said police spokesman Harold Eley.

Police received a call at 10:03 p.m. Saturday reporting that a man was lying in the street, Eley said. When police arrived they found Williams lying next to a bicycle. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m.

Police are canvassing the area, but no suspect information was available Sunday.

Williams' death was the city's 24th homicide of the year and occurred only hours after a woman was shot to death during an early morning robbery at a Hardee's in the Denbigh area.

Diane Green, a 47-year-old employee, died from a single gunshot wound. Another employee, a 21-year-old Newport News man, was also shot. He was treated for a non-life-threatening injury at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Anyone with information regarding either of these two homicides is asked to call the Crime Line toll-free at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP, or 1-888-562-5887.
