We are moving to the area this summer. My husband will be working near Norfolk Naval Base, and I will be at Old Dominion. We have elementary school kiddos, and I'm wondering if anyone has specific suggestions of areas that would have a short commute but still good neighborhoods, schools, and amenities. Thanks for any input!

I will go ahead and say it because someone will before this post is over......Dont move to Norfolk if you are looking for good schools.....Va Bch or Chesapeake will be your best choice and as far as neighborhoods it all depends on what you want to spend before we can start naming certain ones

Honestly, at this point, I would really like to rent a house for a year or so to get used to the area before we buy. I don't want an apartment, though, so really I think a house with rent between $1800-2400/month would be a good place to start.

The important thing is that it is in a good neighborhood with a good elementary school and a short commute. My husband and I will need to be back and forth to the Naval base and ODU often, so I don't want anything that's too far out.

Thanks for the help!

What about Ghent? Is it a good neighborhood, or should we be looking away from Norfolk and into areas in Chesapeake or VB?

ok move to larchmont, I've lived in larchmont my entire life and it's a great neighborhood. larchmont elementary is a great school and it's at most a mile from any point in larchmont. your other option is west ghent which also has a really good elementary school in Taylor

The schools in Larchmont/Ghent are as good as any around here and they are close (practically adjacent) to both the base and ODU. You would have essentially no commute, great schools and can easily rent for your stated price range. I am a teacher, I know the schools. You are fine in that district.
