My husband just got a job in Newport News Va at the ship yard. We have been planning to move to Va from CT for sometime. We have two children 8 and 16. I am looking for a place for us to live that will allow us to rent according to our income, and affordable, in a very nice neighborhood. He is leaving next week, and will be boarding with his sister, until the kids and I are able to follow. Which will be the end of july. Can anyone tell me of any good places to look? I hear Hampton roads area is really nice. I really need help with this.

You probably want to stay on the Peninsula - Newport News. In NN, you can look in a subdivision called Hidenwood (which is up Warwick Blvd) or a little further down Warwick in the Menchville High School district. By working at the shipyard, he will probably go in early and leave work early so traffic should not be too bad. (I know the roads do not mean anything to you, but hopefully hubbys sister can help out with that).

Another option, is Northern Suffolk (Harbour View), Isle of Wight or Carrollton - all of these areas are right off the Monitor Merrimac bridge tunnel. This area is a little safer and more rural - larger yards etc. We normally try to advise newcomers to live in an area that does not involve tunnel driving to get to and from work. However, the Monitor Merrimac is the least congested tunnel in Hampton Roads and should not be too bad with shipyard hours.

Personally, I would prefer living in the above area. I like the whole RT 17 corridor because it is a quiet area of HR, yet close to shopping.
