Why when I go during the night time to the ocean front in VA Beach is so ghetto? Any ideas?

There are a few nightclubs on the strip, so at night, the crowd tends to change.

Yep, the crowd does change. During the day, mostly families and when they retire at night, the goonies come out.

I think most tourist strips are like that. What are you looking for, exactly? We like the Shore Drive area of the bay much better. About 20 minutes from the strip, from the Lynhaven pier to Chick's Beach.

I love it during the day, but yes you can tell a difference at night.

I don't know if this is still true... but what was explained to me is that during the day it's the tourist crowd. They go to bed then the crowd changed to more of a white party drunk bar crowd. After 2AM and the bars close, it changes to more of a black crowd that just walk around (most venues are closed).

Friends have pointed out that in the black community getting drunk till you puke partying isn't their thing.

Not sure if this is true these days or not.

The Oceanfront at night is like a completely different world than in the day time. Since most the clubs/bars play hip-hop and rap, they attract that crowd. I'm not saying I dislike hip-hop (I very much like a lot of hip-hop, actually) but unfortunately one of the main demographics of people that listen to that genre are the gangstas who use violence first and don't question it. So far this tourist season, Peppermint Beach Club was shot up and a man was injured, someone was shot at The Cave, and 3 days later someone was stabbed outside of Abbey Road (that man just died in the hospital yesterday). There may be more cases of violence down there at night, but I've only heard those three. Last time I was down there (2-3 weeks ago), I noticed mostly rowdy drunks, gangstas, and tough-guy military dudes acting the worst. From a guy's perspective, it's a lot of "sizing up" and that mentality of "Oh, I bet I could kick his a$$," and it leads to fighting.

But it's not just the hip-hop crowds causing problems. I was in a band for awhile, and whenever we played at the Oceanfront, there'd be at least one fight, many times resulting in the show being shut down. It's the reason why Peppermint Beach Club is the only venue down there that'll have metal/hardcore shows, and they only do it once a month or so.

I don't know if they need more security at the clubs and bars or what, but it sucks not feeling safe in an area that's supposed to be family-oriented. I feel bad for the tourists who think Virginia Beach is gonna be great, and then they see how horrible it is there once the sun goes down. I'd be pretty bummed.

I'm not sure if I wasn't even born or may have been a little tike, but I heard about the Greek Fest! A few of my older friends remember that day very well.

After 2am you have to leave or your car will get towed, so I'm not sure how they can walk around after 2am, unless they are out of town black folk!

It's actually a mixture of all races once the night fall begins.
