Silly question...what type of question is that?! I know...but I was just curious on what type of grass is typically grown in the yards. I know down in FL, its that itchy St. Augustine and Bermuda grass where here we have the softer Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescue, and Ryegrass. We are straight west from you all, but you are also coastal. We also have to water our yards to death to keep them green, its been quite dry the past few years. So we have been limited to watering our yards to either once or twice a week for half an hour during certain hours. How about you?

We use a thick fescue, sun/shade and fertilize twice a year.

I have tall fescue and have noticed, before all this rain, that I have patches of dead grass. I was surprised being that it's quite early in the spring but I have not watered it all as of yet. Most of my neighbors have the same and most look better. Some have a well and water their lawns regularly. A few yards have bermuda or some other type of grass which looks great but I don't know if they water or not.

I have straight bermuda, after years of trying to grow fescue, just gave up and let the bermuda take over. I put Southern Weed and Feed down and it killed everything but the bermuda and some small patches of tall fesue. It looks great all summer, I never water it, but it turns brown in the winter. To combat that, I usually plant annual rye grass in the winter.

Isnt the grass supposed to be brown in winter? Don't you get a bit of cold weather with the occasional ice and snow? We occasionally get snow, not a lot, typically a dusting. But we let our grass go brown for the winter and it greens up again in the spring.

Yeah, pretty much. We typically get 1 or 2 snow days here and it usually melts pretty quick. We actually get a run of Indian Summer in Feb or March then a wicked cold spell followed by rain. I have been outside on Christmas day and I have seen snow at Easter. Winters are usually pretty mild, days in the 40's, nights in the 30's, with an occasional cold spell in the teens.

My next door neighbors on both sides have fescue grass. We have mostly bermuda. Theirs looks perfect year round, but is much higher maintenance and delicate. We love our bermuda even though it browns in the winter. It requires less water and mowing and looks great even though our kids and dogs constantly run all over it.

Never thought I'd be talking about my grass online. )
