Lived in Newport News for about a year (live near colony pines off of denbigh blvd).

I hear alot of people talk about how bad some neighborhoods are in the city and few people told me that they were "shocked that there was still such poverty in America like there is in some parts of east end newport news".

Personally I think Newport News is a nice city and have liked it since i've been here. I've rode all the way down Jefferson ave. all the way to near te shipyard and yes I saw a few projects but I honestly didn't see anything that bad or "shocking". Even rode down Jefferson to east end at night to pick my sister up before. Jefferson is the only part of east end i've been to though. Is there worse down there?

I want to do some driving tomorrow so can anyone tell me of some real "shocking" parts of east end to drive through that would possibly change my opinion? Give me some specific streets/roads to turn on that are considered specifically bad in the east end. Thanks.

One street you may wanna try is Wickham Ave. When NN had all the homicides i heard at least 3 or 4 being located near Wickham Ave.

One thing i suggest is locking your car doors while driving. I went to a bad part of the DC area yesterday (Hillcrest Heights, MD) and got panhandled right at an intersection. With today's economy driving up crime and people getting more desperate you cant take any chances.

I guess bad is a relative term. For some, seeing the East End can be quite shocking; for others that are from larger cities with much worse neighborhoods, then the EE is tame. I hear that Ivy Ave, Madison and 25/26 are "bad"; but then again, I personally have never driven down Jefferson past 664

Getting panhandled while driving is happening more and more around here, and often on corners I woudn't normally expect it.

I'd say the EE is arguably one of the worst areas of HR, but I don't know about shocking. If you ever been to any 'hoods anywhere, I can't see you being shocked at the sight of it. All the things you'd expect to see in any ghetto can be found there.

I have some friends living on Madison Ave and it seemed fine. Once you turn off Jefferson, the neighborhood they live in isn't any different than a regular working class neighborhood. They have a decent sized house and a HUGE backyard. I was over there last weekend and was really suprised how nice it was. Jefferson Ave is pretty rough, though.
