My husband needs to go to the Air Force base @ Hampton on August 5th so we figured we'd extend the trip and relax for a few days! Is there a particular town anyone might recommend for a short vacation? I.e. we've been checking out Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News. We're not really into historical tours, etc, so we're having a hard time narrowing down our destination! We're more into good shopping, restaurants, and natural sights (i.e. driving). I'm actually thinking Richmond might be the best fit although it's over an hour away, but if there's something amazing I'm overlooking in the smaller towns that would keep us busy, I'd love to know!

I'll check out the threads for local goings-on, but I thought I'd post for some feedback as well.

Thanks in advance!

For shopping close-by the Peninsula Town Center is worth a look, as is Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News. For resturants try NN City Center or Port Warwick. If you want something bigger Downtown Norfolk and VA Beach Town Center arent far away.

If he'll be at Langley in Hampton then you will want to be staying on the Peninsula. Getting through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel during the rush hours might be tough on you or your hubby if you are not used to it. It can back up for MILES just under normal traffic or even longer if there is an accident.

If you're not into History, then skip staying in the Williamsburg area. They do have the outlet shopping there so its worth a trip if you are into shopping. It's just 15-20 minutes from Hampton so no need to stay in Williamsburg if you're only going to shop there.

Va beach is about an hour - hour and a half (depending on traffic) from Hampton/Newport News so not too bad for a day trip if you are inclined to head down tehre for...something. Norfolk has a great mall called Macarthur Center that has more of the upscale (for THIS area) stores. Again, about 45 minutes drive from Hampton so not bad for an afternoon drive. The south side has better and more varied restaurants if you're looking for big name places such as Cheesecake Factory, Macaroni grill, PF Changs, etc. But if you're looking for good local places the peninsula has a lot to offer, in addition to the standard chains like carabbas, red lobster, olive garden, chedders, etc.

I'd recommend getting a hotel in Newport news. Specifically the Kiln Creek area off of Victory blvd near I-64. Its a very short drive to the AF base (MANY of the military live in that area), and there are restaurants, grocery stores, kmart, walmart and target with in a short drive. It is also a safe area. There are 4 or 5 hotels in that area and 3 of them are new within the past several years. Can get you the names if you'd like. I cant remember exactly all thats there, but I think like a Hilton garden Inn, Mariott express type hotel, I think maybe a holiday inn express or Hampton Inn.

Thanks so much for all the great advice guys! I'd definitely ask for the names of some of those hotels, Cin, but my husband booked us a night on the base. Your suggestions are great though, we'll definitely check out some of those areas!
