I'm looking to rent an apartment in the safest possible neighborhood in the HR area. We want access to nice grocery stores and nice chain restaurants. We'd prefer a gated community. Job would be in the Fort Monroe area. Will take a longish commute to live in low crime area. Where should we look?

Sorry, I know of no gated communities in this area. Maybe someone else might know of a gated apartment complex..............but the safest city in Hampton Roads is Va Bch as far as crime stats....but even there you have to pick your areas carefully.......So I would suggest to start your search in Va Bch......And yes traveling from Va Bch to Fort Monroe and back everyday will be a longish commute........some days it may be easy and fairly quick other days it may take hours

What about up towards the Williamsburg way? That will probably net you a shorter commute then Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg is just covered with every kind of shop you can think of, and if its not there, its probably right near by in Newport News.

I would say Isle of Wight, Northern Suffolk, Carrolton. Areas all along RT 17 from the Monitor Merrimac to the James River Bridge.

Northern Suffolk - specifically Harbour View is a very nice area. It isn't gated, but there are a variety of home types there from apts/condos to very expensive homes. There is also a brand new Harris Teeter and a few chain restaurants, but the Ches Square Mall area has more of the chain stuff and it is a safe area too.

Since safety is your primary concern, I would chose the above areas because you cannot go wrong in any 'neighborhood' there.

Thank you damian. The apt complex i think you are referring to is Falcon Creek.

Hampton isnt what i'd call the lowest crime area of HR but the apt complexes along Magruder Blvd/Hampton Hwy in Hampton and York County are pretty safe plus you wont kill yourself with the commute to Ft Monroe.

I live in City Center at Park Place. The gates here close around 6 or 7 and you need a gate opener to get in and out once the gates are closed. I feel pretty safe here even though Newport News gets a bad rap here. I've only lived in Virginia for about 10 months. Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter, Fresh Market, Costco, Farm Fresh and Kroger are all close by as well as numerous chain restaurants.

You might consider Williamsburg. It's about a 45 minute commute from Ft Monroe.
Spottswood Commons is a gated Apt complex. One of the only ones I am aware of.
Personally I would rather live in New Town at Oxford apartments and be near shopping, bars, restaurants, etc.
City Center and Port Warwick are much closer though.
As a footnote Ok. This doesn't directly answer Gator Dudes question about crime. I get asked this question all the time. Is your area safe ? Where are the high crime rate areas ? What areas should I stay away from ?
The VA State police produce an annual report compling crime stats from across the state of Virginia.
The problem is the crime rates are for the regions and they lump together all incidents. You can find the full report for 2008 and earlier years here: Virginia State Police - Crime in Virginia Publication
You can also search for other states to get a comparison.
Here is a snapshot of areas throughout the state:
The first number is the population. the second is the incident rate per 100k

I should add that The FBI, on its web site, recommends against using its data as a ranking for a variety of reasons and does not rank the crime rates for cities. In November 2007, the executive board of the American Society of Criminology (ASC) approved a resolution opposing the development of city crime rankings from FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCRs). The resolution states the rankings "represent an irresponsible misuse of the data and do groundless harm to many communities" and "work against a key goal of our society, which is a better understanding of crime-related issues by both scientists and the public
Murder is the only statistic that all agencies are required to report. Consequently some agencies do not report all the crimes.
