How does everyone feel about it? I am considering moving to the area, but do not have/want a car. Is Norfolk the kindof city that you can live in without a car?

Depending on where you live and work, absolutely. Busses run every 15-30 minutes at peak. The brand new light rail is supposed to run every 7 1/2 minutes, ferries run every 15 minutes, easy to find/ call cabs, etc. Only problem is some bus routes stop running at 8-9 PM. But visit gohrt.com to look at the transit system. I'm an occasional rider and take it to downtown norfolk and the virginia beach oceanfront.

I wouldn't recommend moving to Norfolk without a car. Though Norfolk has parts that are extremely walkable, like Downtown and Ghent, chances are you aren't going to spend all of your time in those two neighborhoods. In fact, chances are you won't spend all of your time in Norfolk alone, and public transit here is not good enough to take you all over Hampton Roads.

I lived without a car for a number of years in Norfolk because I worked downtown. You can easily live in Ghent and walk to downtown.

While it's possible to get to every city in Hampton Roads, it can take a long time and isn't as efficient as say, the Washington Metro. It'd be possible to live in Norfolk with no car, but not optimal.

Thanks so much for the replies! Moving without a car is a priority for me. I once lived in Montgomery AL without a car and it while I liked living there, not having a car made it untennable after a while and I don't want to find myself in that situation again. Too bad DC is to cost prohibitive for me...
