I just took 5 minutes as you suggested and the crime rates are roughly the same (using crime indexes). However property crime is much higher in VA Beach. Other categories are about the same. Sorry to burst your bubble. I went to high school in VA Beach about 20 years ago. It was a much different place then, with much lower crime than Norfolk. The crime rate has gone up in VA Beach and down in Norfolk. Now they are pretty much the same. I miss the old VA Beach.

So sure you cant get away from crime unless you live in a bubble, but what you can do is better your odds from being a victim of a crime...People on this forum are always asking about what neighborhoods or section of a certain city they should live in.....most times the replies they get are based on how safe a certain neighborhood is.......low crime and good schools will always be the two most important and often asked questions when someone is looking to move somewhere new.

I dont think you fully understand how crime stats work and how crime is compared city to city or state to state......
Lets say that Norfolk had a 1000 stolen autos in their city last year, and for this debate lets say Va Bch had a 1000 also....well someone could say that both cities had the same number of stolen autos so the crime as far as stolen autos are equal for both cities but that person would be incorrect....Why? Because Va Bch has twice the number of residents then what Norfolk has............ So for the crime to be at the same level in both cities then Va Bch would need 2000 stolen autos a year to be equal to the 1000 that Norfolk has because of the population difference

Some interesting news for Norfolk's mass transit future. I haven't read through the entire plan yet, but seems pretty cool so far:

Very cool! I don't know why so many are against rail, it's so much easier than dealing with gridlock and maniac drivers on a daily basis. I'd love to see a statewide rail system, not amtrak, so I could hop on a train and go wherever I want independant of a car.

The train will bring jobs to the area, increase population, make it easier and cheaper for tourists to go where they want. It should alleviate traffic. I believe the money will be made back within a few years once put in place. It will bring new economies to scale.
