Hi! We've finally arrived and are now getting down to the business of finding a house. We have been looking at the Gloucester Point area as somewhere you can possibly get a little more house for your money and still be safe--is this true? By "safe" I mean really safe, leave-your-first-floor-windows-open-at-night safe, don't-worry-about-it-if-you-have-to-leave-your-young-kids-outside-for-a-moment-while-you-answer-the-phone safe. Is Gloucester Point this kind of safe? Are the people friendly? Overall, we've found the people in the peninsula area (we're most familiar with York County and Newport News, at this point) to be extraordinarily nice and helpful. Will we find the same in Gloucester Point?

I would say yes, having lived here for 13 years now without locking my doors. Yes as in more so than York County, where I once lived for seven years, and Newport News, in which I have never lived but would not do so due to gang activity that seems to be slowly spreading from the east

From what I've seen/heard as well as personal experience, I'd rank those localities in order of Gloucester Point, York County, then Newport News, with Gloucester Point being the overall safest. I personally wouldn't recommend leaving doors unlocked no matter where I was but that's your prerogative.

Gloucester in general is ridiculously safe. hahaha

And Newport News can be divided into "north" and "south." South is bad. North is good. Example: I live in Denbigh and left my front door open (literally OPEN...not just unlocked) for an entire day one time. No burglary. You can leave your bike on the curb and have little fear that it'll be gone in the morning... As opposed to an apartment complex in the Tabb area of York County where my son's bike was stolen.

Wasn't there something just on the news tonight about someone getting robbed in Gloucester- someone took 2 pipe wrenches and flooged her two dogs and then stole items in the house? THe most sickening thing IMO was the two dogs- you would have thought it would scare off the burglar(s) but instead they too were attacked. Poor babies. You can always replace "stuff" and work on your emotions after being so violated, but the poor labs!

Yes it is sad, but at least the puppies are OK, I think. I saw an interview with the homeowner on the news. They stole her grandson's piggy bank!!!!!!

I live in GloCo and it is a safe community but the politics and govt officials are very corrupt and lots of good ole boy mentality is alive and well. GloCo is in the news always about lawsuits, corruption and I think once some of these BOS are gone hopefully we can get back to a normal environment. Lacking are the big retail stores and malls for shopping(I would like to see that but other want to keep the "country feel" atmosphere here)...there are some new dev plans for a combined housing/shopping district but construction has not even started for that. Until the economy picks up slow is the word for progress in GLoCO.
