The Army band at Fort Monroe in Hampton will give their final outdoor concert of the summer "Music Under the Stars" series, performing their annual "1812 Overture" concert, complete with cannons tonight (Thursday, August 27th) at 7 pm. There will also be a presentation by the 82nd Airborne All American Freefall Team. If you haven't been to one of these free concerts, you are really missing out! They are held outside, right by the bay, in a fun, safe, child-friendly environment. There are usually food vendors, but you can also pack a picnic basket or bring your own food. Bring a blanket and/or folding chairs and enjoy some great music - usually a little of everything from classical to current songs.

Access to the post isn't that difficult, but unless you have a military sticker, you will be required to get a guest pass at the booth (need license and registration) so come a little early. Also, I think the parachute team performs prior to the concert so plan to arrive early.

Here's a link to the band's website: The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band

Maybe I'll see you there!

Thanks for posting this Brian! My family has always loved going to the Music Under the Stars and especially the finale with the 1812 overture.

It is always a wonderful evening of fun, music, and a delightful view of the Chesapeake Bay and all of the sailboats that go by.

We are going to try and swing by this evening!

It was a great concert! Had a brief downpour and got completely soaked, but most of the crowd waited it out and enjoyed a wonderful concert. They had an all-male chorus from The Army Band in DC join them and the cannons were right on cue during the 1812 Overture! Certainly the TRADOC Band should be added to the list of reasons to love living in Hampton Roads.
