I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Salem school district. We are moving to the area and are trying to decide if we want to live in Chesapeake or Virginia Beach. I like Great Bridge, but I also thought that some of the neighborhoods near the Honey Bee golf club and off of Ferrell Parkway were nice. However, I had someone tell me to avoid the Salem school district. I saw Salem HS does seem to have bad SAT scores. I also see there are a number of sex offenders in the area....though there seems to be a lot of sex offenders in general in the area. Our children are young and will be attending Catholic school next year, but I still want to make sure we are in a good school district. Any thoughts on the Salem area? The other areas listed as being nice such as Great Neck are too expensive and too far for my husband, who will be working in Norfolk.

From what I've heard Salem s.d. is not so great! My child won't start School for (2) more yrs,, but have friends w/kids in schools and some went there and just didn't like it.
The Ocean lakes area has good Schools and homes are not to pricey. Also, Kellam s.d. in Christopher Farms are pretty good. I'm not sure if your mocing here from out of state,,, but good luck to you.
THe home prices here are now out of sight and crime can be a problem as well. So I would suggest do your homework and stay away from certain areas.. chimney Hill, green Run, Rosemont Area - those are just a few.
GOod luck

Salem schools arent great, but not all of the areas that go to them are bad. Its kind of like how Kellam used to be before they carved the riff raff out and sent it to Landstown.

A great deal of the new construction in the city has, and is going on in the Salem district.
