My husband, our 3 yr old son, and myself are planning on moving to the area. I had posted another thread about the Williamsburg area but I think that VA Beach would be more for us.

We love the outdoors and are trying to find some place for our son to grow up and be outside as much as possible. We are from GA and would like a little bit of a climate change.

One of my concerns is the cost of living. We would be looking for apartments around $800 or so to begin with. Is that do-able? I have also looked at Chesapeake since I had heard it was less expensive. Any thoughts on that?? Are there any neighborhoods within VA Beach to consider??

It would be great to hear from any mid 20s women out there with children to give me your opinion on raising kids there and the social aspect of that area.

not in my 20's, late 30's actually, I'm a widow, active duty soldier of five. I hope that my experience as a mother will help you. My children went to Williamsburg county schools. GREAT school system!! I now live in Chesapeake and travel to Va Beach very often. I don't see too much of a difference in the cost of living. I do know that as far as school systems, Chesapeake is way better. I know your child is young, but this may be something you may want to consider as well. There are GREAT neighborhoods in both Chesapeake and VA Beach. It will just take some time to find what you are looking for. Consider if you want neighbors over top of you when looking for an apartment or a home. I prefer a home just for privacy reasons. I always have because I don't like the drama of others invading the walls of my home. Consider the noise of others and how it may affect your child when sick or sleeping. Again, I'm in my 30's, just from my own experience, I hope some of what I have typed will help you.

If your husband will be working at the Wal Mart Distribution center in James City County/ Williamsburg ( Close to Newport News border) VA Beach and Chesapeake will be quite a hike. It will be a 50-60 mile drive each way which could easily take an hour to an hour and a half, depending on traffic and time of day. You will have to use a tunnel to get there either the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel or the Monitor Merrimac ( Preferred) . If you are coming up to scout apartments, take this drive during the time he will be working. Make sure you are ok with it..

I completely agree with the above poster. Commuting from either Va Beach OR Chesapeake, to Williamsburg, would be a horribly long commute. I'd never even consider that as an option.

as much as I would love for you to be on this side of the river, don't do it!!! traveling across the river, in the tunnel/bridge traffic is worse than a life sentence to hard labor : )

good luck!!

Have to agree, the tunnels are a nightmare!!! I am not sure how much you will get in HR with a price range of $800 a month for an apartment. You might get a 1 bedroom in a so-so neighborhood, but I think that is about all. It is very expensive to live here so be prepared for a shock.

$800? Not to sound mean, but good luck with that. For anything over 1 bedroom, that price is going to get you in to a pretty bad area in most of Hampton Roads, especially Virginia Beach.
