Hey all,

So I'm new to the area, and I'm wondering... how the heck do I meet people? I'm 19, I'm not in school, and the place I work is filled with people in their mid to late 20s. It sucks being new to an area and under 21...

I'm hoping to stay on the Hampton side of the bridge*

Go to downtown Norfolk, or the Virginia Beach Oceanfront..

Downtown and the Oceanfront are definitely places to go if you're into clubs and stuff, but being under 21 might make things difficult. Not being in school makes things difficult too. Most people I know are friends with co-workers and classmates, from either high school or college. Me and my little group of friends are one of the only groups I know of that actually came about from just living in the same neighborhood. We all grew up together, and that seems kinda rare for this area...I guess because it's transient in nature.

Anyway...

If I were you, I'd find something you're in to and check around online for events that interest you to find people to hang out with. For example, if you're really into music I'd look around for concerts or shows and go check it out. If you're into cars, go check out one of the many car shows that happen every weekend. There's some skate parks in the area too if you're a skateboarder or bike rider, and the beaches have plenty of surf spots and surf shops if you're into that. There's art fests and other cultural things that go on too. Try HamptonRoads.com's "event calendar" for stuff coming up. Just keep an open mind and don't be afraid to try new things, especially since you're new to the area. Doesn't hurt to branch out a bit.

The area is chalk full of bars and clubs. If you arent in to that scene, and you dont like the beach, you are fairly screwed.

My best suggestion would be to hang around ODU and Norfolk State, or even sign up to a class. My sister is constantly doing something or other with the various clubs, and they would be mostly around your age.

Meeting people is overrated. Just stay home, drink in the dark, and chat with hot babes on the internet.

I saw on your profile that you're a photographer. There's lots of sites that host meet-ups with other photographers living in your area. I'd start there maybe.

On the Peninsula, people go to DT Hampton, Power Plant area; City Center in NN and Port Warwick (Brickhouse Tavern has a large CNU crowd); Schooners Bar and Grill by CNU is also a good hangout
