I am a single male, 24 years old, and moving to the Hampton Roads area. My job will be in Norfolk and I am looking to find an area to live. I want to be by the water, some bars, and any nightlife for the weekends. I am an active guy (running, sports) and enjoy walking to and from places if possible. I am a sucker for a good coffee shop and bar/restaurant with character. Need to be by some young(er) professionals and people.

Ideas? Areas? I have read about the Ocean View area, but don't know much about it. Any information would be great. I will be visiting this coming weekend and perusing the surrounding areas.

Definitely check out Olde Towne Portsmouth and Ghent..they are hip and you will often see bikers and people walking their dogs. Plus local restaurants and coffee shops are abundant in both areas.

Ghent might be a nice fit. It's in walking distance to bars and restaurants... I have a friend who lives there and she loves it.

Ghent, is your area. College nearby and many young professionals. you can walk to most anything you would need. Parking is a pain though

Come to Ghent, you'll love it, not far from the water; VA Beach has gorgeous natural beauties to discover, but Ghent is where a young guy your age and vibe would thrive.:

funny you'd find parking a pain in Ghent, always find it amazing how easy it is, but I drive a small car and like to show off a little how easily I can squeeze in any space , yes residential parking etc.. but move a street down from anywhere and you're good, you'll just walk a block more

Thanks for the help. I visited for a weekend and had my interview. I stopped by Ghent and didn't find it all that impressive. I was wondering if I missed something? It seemed like the area was just about 2 blocks, with a Starbucks and a locally owned coffee shop, a running store, and a theater (among some other things, of course).

Please let me know if I only saw a fraction of Ghent. I really like the Chick's Beach area, mainly because its close to the water and would be a quicker drive to work.
