Riverside is a fantastic neighborhood bordering CNU that has the architecture that you describe, is loaded with mature trees, and has a good elementary school (Riverside) in the neighborhood. My personal favorite (since I live there) is the "greater" Hilton area, i.e, Warwick on the James (Cedar lane is north border) down to Rivermont (Randolph Road is south border) with Brandon Heights and Hilton Village in the middle. Hilton Elementary is also an excellent school (I have one in each of these two schools). Note that the homes in H.V. proper are in a historic area (built 1918) with an architectural review board.

Current # of 3+ bedroom rentals in Port Warwick: 5 under $1800; 2 under $1500; 1 under $1300 (all condos, but some very nice ones).

I grew up in the glendale neighborhoods and liked it fine; it's a nice, quiet neighborhood and you can get from right near J Clyde to Oyster Point without ever once hitting Warwick - a major plus with all the ridiculous construction that's been going on for the last 6+ years. I wonder if they'll ever finish!

Hidenwood and kiln creek have some nice properties, and hilton village is a really nice little area - there are some places to actually walk around and shop. As others have said, though, there isn't a ton to do here, so make friends or you will indeed go stir crazy! There's some fun stuff across the water in the VA beach area, though traffic can be a pain to get over there.

Overall, definitely look around in Hidenwood and Glendale, and definitely hilton village as well.

I am moving to the area in July for a job in Yorktown and have been apartment hunting. I like The Reserves at Arboretum off Jefferson Ave and also the new 700 Acqua at Windy Knolls off Bland. Someone told me that the 700 Acqua place is close to Denbigh and I should be careful. Should I not rent an apartment there? Where are the good areas to live if I am working in Yorktown? My budget is around $1000/month for a one bedroom.

Depending on where in Yorktown, a good place would be along Rt. 134 in either Hampton or York County. I think the 1 beds there are under $1000 and it's a little less risky than Denbigh.

My brother stayed at the Grafton Station Apartments in Yorktown and seemed to like it. I think it was around $800 for a 1 bedroom.

You may also want to consider renting a condo or townhouse. There are currently 5 available in York Co (some in Kiln Creek) under $1000/mo. All are 2 bedrooms, 1000+ square feet.
