We are down in NC and are thinking about moving to PA to be closer to family in MD. Can anyone recommend a good, safe area for us? My husband will have to find a job so I know location will depend on that but we would like to know which areas are nice up there and fairly close to Hagerstown, MD. We have a 7 month old daughter so a family friendly area is very important. Any tips?

Waynesboro, Greencastle, and Chambersburg are pretty close to Hagerstown. All have had some newer housing developments and more on the drawing board that didn't get built with the housing crash. Chambersburg has Target-level chain shopping (and actually a Target distribution center too) or more shopping in Hagerstown itself. It's a pretty low crime area although Chbg has some run-down areas considered sketchy by local standards. The area is not known for many cultural attractions and definitely not social liberalism. Wooded hills/mountains are mearby for an escape to the trails, including the Appalachian Trail that runs nearby. A small airport is in Hagerstown but most fly into Baltimore or perhaps Harrisburg.
