My father actually did it for several years, but he also rented an apartment outside DC and stayed there a few nights a week to cut down on commuting. It's certainly possible, but I wouldn't do it every day.

Also be warned that the I-270 spur is absolutely hellish during rush hour. Be prepared for a 2-hour one-way commute if you decide to go that route (and honestly, I wouldn't...no job is worth spending a 1/4 of your day sitting in traffic).

Yes, people commute from the York area to DC. And yes, it can take up to two hours or more each way. I'm not sure if there is any public transportation that can make the commute easier, but I knew people who carpooled down from that area when I lived in DC. Whether it is worth it depends on how much money you will make versus your living expenses in PA. Moving to MD might be a better option. There is commuter rail (MARC train) that goes out to Baltimore. That area is cheaper than DC and still relatively close to Central PA. Plus, you won't have to drive in DC rush hour traffic.

Also, are you talking about commuting to DC or Northern Virginia? Going all the way out to VA would be crazy during rush hour. I lived in the MD suburbs of DC at one point and wouldn't even consider a job in Northern VA just because of the rush hour traffic. Even on metro it was a nightmare.
