Hello, I am considering a job opportunity in York and have been checking out York and surrounding cities. It seems like the crime rate is a bit higher than the national average. Even for a town like Lancaster.

Any comments related to this subject. I live in the Pacific NW matching up the crime rates with towns in this area paints a bleak picture. Not trying to be critical, just want to understand.

I am also wondering about the polution and enviroment. How is the air quality?

Is there any fracking going on (natural gas extraction)?

Thanks

The crime rate would only apply within the strict city limits, and even then its easy to tell where you are safe and where you are not in the city. All the surrounding towns/suburbs/etc in the county are pretty safe. Most of the crime is usually drug related, so if you aren't dealing/using then there really is nothing to worry about.

There is no fracking going on in York County.

York is a beautiful city. There is a crime problem, but it seems to be mostly limited to certain (bad) neighborhoods and drug-related. There are safe and beautiful neighborhoods in the city of York. I spent a whole weekend walking around the city and exploring. I didn't feel unsafe in most areas. The downtown has been nicely revitalized. It's like any city -- there are good and bad areas. I would recommend walking around and getting a feel for the city before jumping to any conclusions. Good luck!

York reminds me of a "little Baltimore"

I've lived in York for almost 8 and a half years, and honestly it's great. In the city, there might be higher crime directly in York, and while downtown can be very nice (good dining and entertainment options) I would not live in downtown. The suburbs around York are pretty much all nice though. I have only heard of one crime in my neighborhood and it actually happened to me. It was a minor burglary, and the teens who did it were caught. The school districts in the area are pretty good as well. No fracking is in York - safe to drink water. It's pretty rural; it's gorgeous. Just driving around my suburb provides beautiful, scenic views. But there is enough of a city life for the 21+ crowd.
