I am single, active 61-year old retired guy looking at the rental market for an affordable 1-BR apartment in Harrisburg area. Also, an idea of libraries, parks, and other affordable cultural things to do in Harrisburg and surrounding area.

Are you looking more city-ish, suburban, or small-town-ish?

Rental market for a 1 BR would be very reasonable. For the city, I'd ballpark it around $600-$800/mo (and that would be on the high side when I was living there). The Hbg library system sucks IMO...but it depends on what your reference point is. Mine is well funded, big city libraries like in NYC and Philly. There are plenty of mega bookstores like Borders & BNs though. High culture activities can be kinda nil but I would generally travel to see stuff. I like opera, dance, and jazz. The Luhrs Center at Shippensburg Univ occasionally has interesting performances (although it's mostly turned into stuff that caters to a more rural audience). I remember seeing Wynton Marsalis & Irvin Mayfield there. Otherwise, I would drive to the Kennedy Center in DC, Philly, State College, or take the train to NYC. Plenty of parks and the country can be minutes away. Wildwood Lake, the grounds surrounding Hbg State Hospital, and the Appalachian Trail north of the city are all worth checking out.

Hershey/Hummelstown/Middletown is a great location... good parks and Hershey Theater... 15 minutes from DT Harrisburg but not as busy as the city.
