Can anyone tell me what this road is like between Harrisburg and Gettysburg? Is this a quick way to travel or is it congested? Thanks for any help.

T.

Rt 15 from the MD border is a limited access interstate like road that bypasses Gettysburg. It has some cross traffic north of Gettysberg but is usually a fast drive. The only stop and go section with traffic lights is when it goes through the town of Dillsburg PA about 10 miles S of the PA Turnpike. The section from the Turnpike to Dillsburg and the interchange there have been rebuilt. It is one of the better ways to get from central MD and the DC area if you want to go up to the Turnpike or go to central, Lehigh Valley or NE PA. I use it to go to Reading/Berks PA via the Turnpike.

North of the PA Turnpike there is long-term construction to try to untangle an outdated cloverleaf interchange with PA 581 - finally nearing completion. Traffic lights in Camp Hill Borough are a serious congestion obstacle in morning and evening traffic and these won't be untangled by the current construction. I-83 around Harrisburg necks down to one lane, not once but twice. Especially after the current interchange work is done, the best way to or from I-81 to or from US 15 heading to Gettysburg, will be to use PA 581 which is the western and most modern leg of Harrisburg's "Capital Beltway."

Default Fyi

I never had any problems with congestion. I know around afternoon rush hour it can get crowded around Dillsburg, with their traffic lights, but nothing outrageous.

Be careful of police cars hiding along the side road that intersect with Rt. 15 between Dillsburg and Gettysburg.

Everytime I travel between that area, I see at least 3 police cars. I believe the speed limit is 55 mph.

I received 2 tickets for drving 67mph and 69mph.

I remember taking route 15 on my trips to DC. From what I remember, a beautiful ride. I never encountered congestion in the PA portion of the trip.
