Hi. My husband is going to be taking a job that will require him to split his time between Harrisburg and Towson. We were thinking about moving to York, but don't want to be "in" the city. We were also considering Gettysburg area. Which commute is better, and how long with traffic should we expect the commute to be? Gettysburg to Harrisburg and Towson, or York to Harrisburg and Towson?

We would like to live in a nice, kid friendly apartment complex on the outskirts of a town. Does anyone know of any good complexes in either the York or Gettysburg area?

Thank you all for your input, I've been searching like crazy for info!

York is a big area, and you can still live in the "outskirts" of the downtown area and have a York mailing address. You would actually be in a township or borough and if you have children, they would be attending a non-city school. I can suggest several apartment complexes or rental agencies that might be able to help you. PM me. York is very kid friendly, a great place to have and raise children.

The commute from York to Harrisburg is 30-45 minutes depending on where he would need to be and the time of day/traffic. For Towson it could be 30-60 minutes, again depending on time of day or traffic. From Gettysburg to either Harrisburg or Towson you are looking at another 1/2 hour added to each. Gettysburg is actually 30 miles west of York, but Route 30 is a very slow route and it can take up to an hour to get there from York. Gettysburg is also heavy tourist town, so traffic is always worse during summer.

My vote is for York, as long as you stay on the outskirts. I have a number of friends who live in the various developments along I-83 north of York, and they have suburban / semi-rural living but are only 15-20 minutes from both York & Harrisburg.

I really don't think commuting from Gettysburg to either Harrisburg or Towson would be a pleasant experience.
