As far as I know, Chocolate World never sold discounted chocolate (at least, in my lifetime). There was a brouhaha between Hershey's and the local retailers over the chocolate shop within Chocolate World. "Why would anyone want to come to OUR store to buy Hershey's, when you're going to sell it at a super discount there?!"

So there's an agreement. Chocolate World sells the product at retail (save for the very occasional after-holiday sales special) so the local retailers don't lose out. Chocolate World DOES sell hard to find candies and products that are otherwise not found in the stores, which is awesome and I love it.

The singing cows notwithstanding, Chocolate World is my favorite free place to visit in Hershey. I'll park for free up by the Hershey Story (on 422) and walk down to Chocolate World, it's a lovely walk. Aside from Chocolate World, there are some Hershey-themed shops just outside of HersheyPark that you can walk to and browse without having to pay to go inside the park. Souvenirs!

Ki0eh hit things to do in Hershey right on the money.

This is what I recall as well. Maybe LVN got lucky during a once-in-a-lifetime oopsie by Hershey?

It wasn't packages of Hershey products you find at the grocery store, it was the mail order stuff. The pretzels were in a tin, inside a box, that you would of received if you had bought it from a catalog or online.

Guess luck was with you that day. I wouldn't mind taking out-of-season leftovers at a discount, it's just that I've never seen them there.

No kidding... Count me in 3 times, I miss the old Hershey too! I think the factory tour was before my time, but I still remember the old version of the Hershey ride that gave out free big chocolate. >__< Also, I miss the old landscape of the theme park as well.

I use to remember that there was nothing there except for the factory, Hershey downtown, the ball field, the Hershey Hotel, Lodge, the park, and the museum. There use to be no strip mall across from the park. I was sort of ok with the gas station being right next to the theme park, but that was as much development as I could take. (The current look of the gas station and its corner spot with the theme park appears very odd to me.) Every couple of the past years that I went back to Hershey, I kept seeing a strip of my childhood being taken away.

Yet, I reluctantly enjoyed the 4-D show. I really had to admit that I was impressed with it. >.> It came down to the point that I had to accept it and move on with the times.

It's probably the same amount of feelings I have for Allentown with Dornery Park. There use to be nothing but nice trees surrounding it until development came in... *sighs* At least, the development did not affect Dorney's quality.

And that's weird about the discounted chocolate/candy. Because, I do remember a few times in Chocolate World where there was a discounted chocolate/candy period. And I remember this clearly because my mother and I would often bring back loads of candy/choclate from the place. 0___0 I'm not exactly sure if holidays played a part with that or not, because I went to Hershey during the non-holiday spring or summer days.

A few years ago the TurkeyHill gas stations were participating in a sweepstakes with The Hershey Co. where the prize was to "Win a Trip to Hershey PA!" It was really strange seeing that purchase display inside that gas station.

I understand the actual factory tours ended in 1973 so those who remember those are dating themselves.

There remain three (3) actual factories still producing chocolate confectionery in Hershey, PA, soon to be two as the old factory is closing to be replaced by an expanded factory that was originally built 20 years ago. Most of the production that moved to Monterrey, N.L. a couple of years ago was in plants from California, Canada, Connecticut, and to some extent Reading, PA. Some of the production from those closed facilities was also moved to Hershey plants in Robinson, IL and near Waynesboro, VA. Thus it is not at all true that "all the production moved to Mexico" which many folks even in the Harrisburg area seem to believe.

Have you been to Dorney during the summer after school lets out? Nothing but utter chaos.
When you walk out at night, after most everybody is gone, you see rows of garbage in the parking lot (and I wish I was exaggerating) where cars had parked. Add in the bus tours, and the place is not fun in the summer.
I too remember the old Dorney, parking on the hill in the back, where employees park now.

I was going to ask that. I remember going on dates to Hershey in the late 80's and early 90's and it was the current Chocolate World layout(with some changes of course).

Haha.. That's rather funny. Displaying a sweepstakes for your literal next door neighbor. Great promotion.

And thanks for your info and update. Good that the jobs are still kept within the country, at least. Looking forward to seeing this "expanded factory" whenever I go back for a visit.

Really? O__o So the quality really went down after all these years, eh? (And I thought that strip mall, next to Dorney, was just the beginning...)

The quality must've reached its prime, then, during my last time being inside the park. That should be about more than 7 years ago. It was the evening hours. My friend has a cousin, who lives in Allentown, so we were able to avoid parking altogether. Just have one of his parents drop us off and we were good to go. The crowd factor wasn't too bad either. I didn't really have much of a time to inspect the parking lot. I thought the park, in general, was still fairly clean as Cedar Fair was a reputable theme park company.

Fast forward to a few years later, which is about 3(?) years ago. I was passing through Allentown with my father. We went to take a peek at how the park was doing these days, and wow... One look at that parking lot and I can agree that it was crazy. Didn't go in, but the atmosphere looked busier than I could remember. So, I'm not surprised for the amount of the parking lot litter that appear telling by your account. But, I'm just a bit surprised that Dorney has gotten a lot more visitors, thus, I was hoping Cedar Fair was able to maintain their quality control of the past. Guess not.

I will say that before school lets out and after labor day, Dorney Park is an absolute joy. But, with the low daily admission (35 to Hershey's 50) they get a lot of people driving there and taking bus trips in the summer.

Oops! Sorry, it was $42.95 for adults. I just called today and verified. I didn't ask the kid's price as anyone 9 and up pays adult price. Sorry for the misinformation earlier. I tried to edit my post but apparently you can't do that after a certain amount of time - or I'm too dumb to figure out how.
