Hi all! -
My husband and I may be relocating to Hershey from Philadelphia, as I might have an opportunity at Hershey Medical Center. We're having a tough time finding homes for rent right in Hershey (we don't want to live in an apartment complex or a rental community) and I'm wondering what your suggestions are for safe and quiet neighborhoods that aren't too far of a commute. In what towns should I search for a house/townhouse for rent? We currently live in the suburbs so I don't know if I'm sold on living in Harrisburg proper. We have no children so school district isn't a concern, but since I'll be working nights and sleeping days my biggest requirement is a very safe area.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Briarcrest (although a "community") does have some rental townhouses, and it's walking distance for most folks to the Med Center. I have noticed some sign-out-front detached and semi-detached houses for rent in the Hershey village area recently, perhaps they're not on craigslist.

Most areas north, west, and south of Hershey have a Hummelstown 17036 postal address (the Medical Center would too if they hadn't pulled strings with the Post Office years ago), which is also very safe but not quite a price premium of Hershey village. Hershey Heights and Deer Run area are (except for crossing the busy Middletown Road) easy bike rides mostly on trail to the Med Center, as is the southeast part of Hummelstown Borough. The Hummelstown areas not also in Derry Township might be slightly cheaper other things being equal.

Thanks so much for reading and replying! I've heard of Briarcrest, although we've had some horrible experiences with rental communities in our past so we're going to stay away. Our budget is such that I didn't think we'd have trouble finding a decent rental condo or townhouse in the area ($1400ish for 2 bed/2ba). I will be in town on Monday and will keep my eye out for those signs! Craigs' List hasn't been as helpful as I'd hoped in our rental search, lol.

Thanks again!

we have rented a Briarcrest townhouse(3Br) for a year before buying a house in Hershey. Rent was around $1100 and had no problems. maintenance crew showed up really fast when we had the need and great having pool and tennis nearby
