We are currently living in northern NJ and are considering moving to the Mechanicsburg area. I'm concerned when I hear how bad things are in Harrisburg...bankruptcy and crime. Would it be safe for me and my wife and 1year old to visit Harrisburg for entertainment, dining, etc if we were to move to Mechanicsburg? Thanks!

Hi!

I fully understand your concerns.
Harrisburg proper actually comprises but a small portion of the overall metro area that also includes Mechanicsburg.
Carlisle, Camp Hill and surrounding area on the west side of the Susquehanna River and Herhsey, Hummelstown and countless small communities that make up the " East Shore of the metro area " provide many many choices for arts, entertainment and shopping.

Harrisburg also has many museums and venues that are well worth your time.
Just like any medium to large sized metro area there will be crime including in Mechanicburg but Mechanicsburg is not Harrisburg in that regard.
I moved away from the area to Allentown due to a job transfer but would prefer to be back in the Harrisburg metro area.
I honestly love the area and I think you will as well.

I agree with the above poster. I lived in Harrisburg for several months last year during an internship, and I miss it.

Mechanicsburg is one of the most desirable places to live, I'd say, at least on the West Shore. Personally I liked most of the West Shore.

Most of the regular entertainment you'll likely seek, such as movies, restaurants, etc., you'll find on the West Shore. Harrisburg does have festivals, museums, and other events that you might seek out, and you'll be perfectly safe doing so.

Most of the crime in Harrisburg is going to be late at night in certain sections of the city that I doubt you'll have any reason to visit. That of course doesn't mean that you shouldn't use the same amount of common sense you would anywhere else, but Harrisburg is not North Philly. You'll be fine.
