I'll be at the Best Western Hotel/Conference Center on E Park Drive for a conference this coming week. Always look for open mics/stages to play some live, acoustic music; the sort of place where they have a sound system set up & one can just plug & play. There's a ton of out-dated info on-line about various events and venues for Monday & Tuesday - the two nights I'll be in town - altho this one looks good for Tuesday: Carley's Ristorante/Piano Bar, Open Mic from 7-9, 204 Locust St.Harrisburg, PA 17101. Any suggestions for Monday night? I play a mix of swing, blues, folk & rock drawing on music from approx 1925 - 1975 so some venues fit better than others. Thanks!

I don't know their schedules off the top of my head, so you'll need to call and check. But if I went looking for open mic night, the places I'd put money on would be The Abbey Bar (second floor of Appalachian Brewing Company), Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center, and The Gingerbread Man downtown. Also look into Brewhouse Grille and Flinchey's -- they're both a few minutes outside of town, across the river in Camp Hill. Dockside Willie's and Duke's Riverside (just across the river in Wormleysburg) are also worth checking out.

I'm not really in tune with Monday nights, so it's possible that none of these guys have open mic. But if I went looking, those would be the first places I'd check. As for the "vibe" of the venues, Gingerbread Man tends to be more of a working-class urban bar these days. Abbey Bar is pretty eclectic and HMAC tends to lean acoustic -- but they've got a very young pseudo-hipster crowd. HMAC always gives me the creeps, honestly. The rest are fairly mainstream venues catering to mostly 20- and 30-somethings.

EDIT: Check with Midtown Scholar. They frequently host local acoustic performances, but I have no idea if they do an open mic night or not.

Also, Carley's is a classy place. I like it there. It's usually a somewhat older (40+), more subdued crowd. I think the bar area might handle 10-15 people at full capacity, and you'll be in a very intimate environment.
