DEAR ALL!

We would apreciatte if we could get advice our move to Hershey or Hummelstown.

My husband has taken up a Job at Hershey and we are thinking of relocating to either Hershey , Hummelstown or Harrisburg.
We have a 1 year old daughter. This is the first time we are moving away from family in Mexico and thus confused on where to move.We were considering moving to Briarcrest gardens in Hershey but read some bad reviews regarding the apartments like old fixtures , bad management and high heating and electric costs due to old equipment etc

Would be great if we could get some advise regarding most child friendly and cooperative apartment complexes with good management and Tips on where to get reasonable furniture in the area.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!

Hi there and welcome to Central PA!

Avoid moving to any place that uses Harrisburg City school district. The schools are awful and should be avoided at all cost. All of the other school districts in the area are fine.

I've always found the apartment prices in Hershey to be rather expensive for what you get. I've heard wonderful things about The Village of Pineford in Middletown, but they might be a bit further away than you'd like -- about 20 minutes from Hershey.

There are a number of good apartment complexes near the area between Route 441 and Chambers Hill Road. Take a look at Chestnut Pointe (more modern) and Aspen Hill (a little older, but not bad by any means). Your commute to Hershey will be fairly easy from these areas, and the area is quite nice as far as traffic / crime / education / things to do. If you continue south on PA 283 or Highspire Road another five minutes, there's a new (2-3 years old) rental townhouse complex called Emerald Pointe. We weren't really impressed, but that's just personal preference.

As for furniture, there are a number of discount furniture outlets sprinkled all around Harrisburg. Two that come to mind are Eddie's Furniture at 200 S Cameron St and Furniture & Mattress Discount King at Paxon St & S 28th St. I've purchased from both of them in the past. Their quality is good enough to stand up to heavy use, but not something that you'll be handing down to your grandchildren. There's also a local chain called Big Lots that gets a lot of furniture in, but to be honest, I don't think their quality is as good as the first two places I mentioned.

Can't specifically say about the apartment management of any, but either Madison Heights or the Meadows of Hanover developments are decidedly more modern/upscale than Briarcrest. Another possibility might be Alpine Heights at Hershey - Harrisburg,PA apartment community details and pictures which like Briarcrest is an older complex.

Any of the 4 would be a typical destination for folks moving in from outside the area.

The Meadows is not within the Hershey (Derry Township) school district but is within the fairly well regarded Lower Dauphin School District, the other 3 are in Derry schools. Of course with a 1 year old you have time to move before schools become an issue.

Madison is located near a large Township park, Meadows has its own community amenities, Briarcrest is near the only bus line. Alpine Heights AFAIK is light on community amenities.

Most trips are by private automobile, transit is rarely a workable option around Hershey. If the worksite is the Hershey Co. Technical Center or the Reese plant (both on Reese Avenue) from Briarcrest it is a walk for a commute, across busy US 422 at a signalized intersection. Madison Heights is not quite connected to the Township bike path, but could be considered bikeable to these two worksites. Alpine Heights is closer in distance but have to emerge on a steep treacherous busy road (Waltonville Road) for walking or biking to work. Meadows would be a long bike ride along busy roads, at least they have wide paved shoulders. Meadows would have the advantage if the worksite is Crystal A Drive.

That's correct. The legal name of the municipality that development is in is South Hanover Township, parts of which have a Hershey postal address and parts of which have a Hummelstown postal address. The collective name Meadows of Hanover for the planned unit development also refers to the single-family developments adjoining the apartments.
