Hello,

I'm not trying to be rude but I have lived in the Harrisburg area for almost three years now and have noticed that most people don't exercise or really care about their physical appearance. I understand that once you reach a certain age it is harder to keep the pounds off, but I don't really understand people ages 18-40 that seem to not care at all about their physical appearance. I know that the entire country is battling an obesity problem, but the Harrisburg area seems to have a large proportion of out of shape people that don't really care. I have lived in several different metro areas, and most younger and middle aged people in metro areas at least try to work out and dress respectable. Is it because this area is so conservative? I spent some time in Oklahoma City and I believe the Harrisburg area is hands down more conservative. Harrisburg/York/Lancaster is decent sized metro area, you would think there would be a larger base of people who are health conscience. Please forgive me if I sound rude or shallow, I'm not trying to be. I'm just curious.

I don't think your rude or shallow. I do take some offense though when you say conservative people don't care about appearance. I'm conservative and I'm very health concious. We need to stop this political correctness and have serious discussion. I wonder what is going to happen to all these attractive people in America someday.

it's because harrisburg is a depressed and impovershed area. most people are too miserable to care about their appearance. i know i was the same way. the only reason i lost weight after high school was because i got a physically demanding warehouse job in that area. i am so glad i moved out of harrisburg, pa.

You are not the only person that notices. Used to live in the area and had some family members come out to visit. One of them was a nice, polite person that I rarely heard say anything bad about anyone. After a few days with us, this person pulled me aside and asked me "is it just me, or are the people around here a little ....larger than other cities?"

Knew a bunch of people that were ER doctors in the area and they came up with a code for it. They couldn't talk to each other around the ER on the way to treat someone about how fat a patient was while passing other patients. But the docs wanted to know what they were in for once they got to a patient. So they started calling every 100 pounds a "York Unit". A doctor on his way to treat someone would get a heads up that the next patient had 3 York units and they knew an obese patient was waiting for them.

The local hospital staffs really notice, they treat these people every day.

Default obesity

I understand that obesity is national issue. However, what strikes me about the people in this area is that very few people do the little things to make them more presentable, such as clothing selection, perfume/cologne etc. I have lived in a big city in Texas and traveled all around the country, and it seems like people in other areas of the country have more pride in their personal appearance.

Again, almost every visitor that I had from out of state commented on just how big the local population seemed to be when I lived there. Think part of it is due to a large population with European heritage passing on their stocky genes to their kids. One reason a lot of pro football players come out of PA, they are just big guys. I've seen this to a lesser extent in places like Ohio and Michigan as well.

Obesity is pretty hit-or-miss in Pennsylvania.

If you're disgusted by the number of fat people around you, move to Cumberland County.

(Yeah, the data is a few years old, but I doubt it's changed much since.)

Generally the more affluent an area is the better looking people are. Appearances matter when you live in a major city and have a high end career. When you're stuck in some rural PA town working at the local gas station for minimum wage it don't matter as much. I live in the Lehigh Valley and it's totally a car dependent area and there are obese people everywhere. Trying to get out but it's tough!

I once took a bus trip to NYC financial district and I felt I was seeing porn stars everywhere.
