My current employer is building a new facility in the conewago (sp?) industrial park near elizabethtown, scheduled to open around april 2015. I haven't been able to visit the area yet but will be in January. I have a couple of questions about where to live, commutes, what to expect...that kind of thing.

I am looking for a 1 bedroom apartment in the $750-800 range that is in a safe area that is within 15-20 minutes of e-town. After doing some research, some of the towns I've come across that seem to fit are e town itself, hummelstown, hershey and lancaster. I've heard to try and shy away from Middletown.I am in my mid twenties, nightlife isn't too important but I would like to be within close distance to movie theaters, stores, shopping etc. Any advice about about specific apartment complexes in those areas would be greatly appreciated - something to point me in the right direction. I have found that you usually only find the negative reviews of apartment complexes so I'm looking for an actual real world experience. I really like newer areas that have a lot of growth and development.

Thanks!

Hi there,
Lancaster native here. I lived in Elizabethtown (Known as Etown around here) for 5 yrs and loved it compared to living in Lanc/West Hempfield area. I'd stay looking in Etown if you're going to be working there. commute from Lanc to Etown isnt that long (maybe 25-30 minutes) but its in aggravating/bad traffic, especially in bad weather (which we have a lot of). Always a pain. Mount Joy is another small town to consider before Lanc. Id prefer to live in either one before there.
Mt joy is btwn Etown & Lanc.

As far as apts., you shouldnt have a problem finding a bdrm in that price range in Etown & Mt Joy. Apt complexes there are pricey and not worth the money imo. When you come to visit, pick up a little newspaper that comes out every Wednesday called "The Merchandiser". Its a small, once a week newspaper where locals advertise. you'll find thats where most of the local landlords advertise their rentals. You can find them in most Turkey Hills and other small convenience/gas shops which are on every corner in that area. Etown also has a nice movie theater. there is also a shopping strip with your basics like a Kmart and grocery stores but not much in the way of big name stores. But you're only about 20-25 min away from Park City which is one of Lanc's biggest Malls and the outlets are another 20 min from there.

There's tons of places to eat there and a few small bars, not much of a night life but you will find some nice restaurant/bar type places. I highly recommend TJ Rockwells for bar/rest. they have outdoor dining/bar in summer too. Very busy place and the food is excellent. Draws a younger crowd in the summer. Etown college is there too so you may find some college type bars. Thats not really my scene any more so can't name any.

I dont think someone not from the area would like living in Hummelstown or Middletown, Im not too familiar with b/c its one of those areas that you wouldnt have a need to go there unless you live there. Hershey is nice, the smell of chocolate in the summer but that a bit of traffic filled drive to Etwn, even worse in summer with Hershey Park and events that way. I hate driving in bad traffic but maybe that wont bother you much. We do get a lot of snowy days which makes commuting a real pain, accidents everywhere. Theres 2 main hwys here, 283 and 30, when theres a problem on one, it carries over to the other one. Seem at least once a twice a week theres accident on there which will cause a back up everywhere.

Not sure what else to add. I know I liked the people in Etown better than anywhere else Ive lived, like Lanc. Columbia etc.
but I will forwarn you, this is a 'clique' town. very hard to meet new ppl and make new friends if you're not from the area. Most around here were born and raised. Its a very polite area but not necessarily friendly if you know what I mean.
Really depends on where you work too but Id say its more a fmily oriented area than a singles scene, in fact the single scene sucks around here. Not sure what else I can tell ya. You can also check classified on "Lancaster Online" for other apt. options. the newspaper does cover the etown/mt joy area too. Be wary of Craigs List ads, I always ran into more scammers that just want your private ID info than anythin but you might find something on there. Sorry in advance for typoes, Im tying quick.
