Living in Gettysburg (Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Carlisle: apartment, renting, condo)

We plan to move from Ocala FL to Gettysburg or surrounding area. Would love to live in a row house in town. Thoughts?

Why a row house?

The area is pretty good, I'm including over to Carlisle in that and, if I were to move to PA in retirement, would be on my short list of places to move to.

I can't speak to schools. Be aware that the set up of school districts may not be what you're used to. Unlike many states, but common to the Northeast, PA schools are not County wide districts but centered on a town. In many systems you literally can see a school from your house but you are in a different district and your kids go there.

I don't know Gettysburg proper, but I hear the town of New Oxford is nice. I know some people who live there, and they like it very much.

There is a list of questions somewhere on here for people to answer when they are looking to relocate. It would be helpful if you could do that, and I think you will get more helpful answers. Maybe someone with more experience on the forum can tell us where this list of questions is located.

Thanks for input. It will only be the 2 of us so don't really need to worry about schools. We love old houses but don't want a lot of yard maintenance.

Want something historic but not run down. Prefer very little yard maintenance. No kids so schools not an issue.

In regards to the rowhouses. I'm not real familiar with those in Gettysburg but in other local towns, Carlisle for example, they're considered, umm, less than desirable places to live.

It was just an idea. We are open to any suggestions and not sold on Gettysburg. Actually where is the closest Wegmans?��

I think the closest Wegmans to Gettysburg is in Harrisburg, but I'm not sure. There is one in Hunt Valley MD as well.

People who prefer historic urban homes, such as I, love the rowhomes in these towns. Some of the most trendy neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, with highest home prices, are in row-house neighborhoods, such as the Mexican War Streets, Lawrenceville, and the South Side. I know that Philly also has numerous desirable and affluent row-house neighborhoods, such as Rittenhouse Square and Old City. The people who dislike these types of homes are usually suburban types.
