Hi:

I live in the Carlisle area and am considering homeschooling my son. Does anyone know of non-religious homeschooling communities. I'm looking for a progressive, culturally diverse group who believes that EVERYONE deserves equal rights.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

JD

It'll be very difficult to find a homeschooling group that is not religiously affiliated. When I was in high school, I knew a girl whose parents homeschooled her without religion being part of the curriculum. Both of her parents were teachers, though.

I will be moving to the area in the next month, and while not planning on homeschooling, I would love to find a group of people in the area that meet your description! Best of luck.

Default Hey there

Where are you moving? From where? Do you have kids? Will you be public schooling them?

Default Healthy Homeschooling

I have been having great luck. Apparently, there are more and more people who are homeschooling for reasons other than religion. I think 20 years ago, even ten years ago, most people homeschooled for religious reasons. Homeschooling was looked at very negatively by mainstreamers. However, with the growing violence and poor public education system in this country, many more people are considering homeschooling as a healthy option for their children. And you can do it in a way where the kids are very socially active. There are communities where kids go hiking weekly with the same group at different parks around the area. There are groups where they establish weekly classes. Maybe 6 people go to Sally's house for art each week. And the same group goes to Linda'a for science experiments each week. Homeschooling does not have to be an isolating experience. From what I heard, you join a homeschool community, and then you find the people you connect with in that community and take it from there.
