I'm looking to move to PA within a year. My sister lives in the Harrisburg area and I'd like to live near her if I can. I'll be semi-retired, getting my pension but maybe picking up a part time job (I'm not good at not doing anything lol). I don't want to live too close to the city but I'd like to keep to about a 30 minute trip to get there. What I'm looking for is a small house to buy (a trailer would be fine too, I'm not picky) in an out of the way, quiet area. I don't mind not having close neighbors. Also I'd like to keep the cost down if I can. If anybody can recommend where I should look I'd really appreciate it.

Northern Dauphin or Perry counties are perhaps the best hope of finding a detached house or trailer where you might not see neighbors. You might find the cost of such places to be high to very high depending on your expectations where you come from. The cost will go down the further north and west you go, at least until you start getting close to State College.

Well if your budget expectations go into six figures for a livable trailer, try Middle Paxton Township, which is the area around Dauphin Borough (17018 zip), plus Fishing Creek Valley Rd (PA Route 443) area (which shares both its Harrisburg 17112 address and school district with a large part of Lower Paxton Township's middle ring suburban area).

Congratulations on leaving Long Island. I moved to the Carlisle area from there back in 2001 and have never regretted it. It was very affordable back then and still is compared to Long Island, but you will still need 100000-150000 to buy any decent livable home.I ended up in a Over55 manufactured home community (double wides) west of Carlisle and new houses there start at about 130000.Very quiet and rural area, 8 miles from town Also your taxes and utility costs can varie wildly depending on which county, township or school district you decide to move to. Chambersburg, PA (60 mins. south of Harrisburg) nice quiet inexpensive suburban/micropolitan area (20,000 population for town, county 150,000). McConnellsburg, PA (20 min west of Chambersburg) is a very quiet rural area, town has 1,100.

Look at New Cumberland, Red Land, Camp Hill or Fishing Creek as well. Just south of Harrisburg but easily accessible, especially if you won't have to travel during rush hour.
